| Involuntary Recall for Marines. What can you do to help? - |
Dear Friends and Family,
With the recent Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) Involuntary Recall (more popularly known as the "back-door draft"), many may be wondering if my son, Cloy, will be effected. Well, within hours of the press release, Cloy received a request from the Marine Manpower Unit in charge of the recall asking if he was exempt as a first responder. For those not familiar with the involuntary recall of 2003, this is the first step to being recalled if you are on their list. Cloy meets all the requirements for the involuntary recall and perhaps is higher on their list as he has served in 3/5 duties they are looking to recall.
Background:
My son enlisted in the Marines at age 17 on the DEP program. He served four years active with two tours in Iraq and is in his second year of IRR. He received the Presidential Unit Citation with his service in Iraq and has served honorably. Last year when he finished his Active duty status, he struggled with trying to fit into a society that barely acknowledges there is a war and after 37 applications for a job, found businesses and corporations that preach "Support our Troops" have no interest in employing them when they return.
He started college last semester and applied for his GI Bill, which he has yet to see a penny. He is trying to become a vital part of society as he struggles to unlearn his military combat training. He has started the process of getting treatment for PTSD after several suicide attempts. He has scars only time can heal. The VA is dragging it's feet in helping him due to the huge budget cuts of the current congress and his official diagnosis is many months away.
Yet, now, before he can take the path of Peacemaker, they will send him back to Iraq. This is not where he belongs nor those that have already honorably served.
Cloy and I work on Veronica Hambacker's congressional campaign because she truly understands the sacrifice our troops have gone through and wants to get to congress to stop this war and the mistreatment of our Veterans. Whether you agree or disagree with this war, It is inherently unfair to send these Marines back. If we do not have enough troops in our "all volunteer armed forces" then maybe we don't belong fighting in a pre-emptive war. Veronica is petitioning Donald Rumsfeld to stop this recall and to let Cloy and other Marines like him continue to heal and start their lives.
In order to help get the word out and get Veronica elected to speak for Cloy and others in his position, we need contributions. We are a grassroots campaign and have battled candidates in the primary with budgets many times our budgets and won. We won because people are ready for her message of Peace even here in Missouri. Remember that no matter where you live, you are effected by congressional representatives from every state. If you have a representative in your area you can believe in, support them. If you don't, support Veronica.
