75,000

Wow. When has a politician ever drawn an audience too big for the Georgia Dome?

In other news, the Georgia GOP chair told conventioneers:

"John McCain is kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross," Everhart said as she began the second day of the state GOP convention. "He never denounced God, either."

Saxby's Patriotic PR stunt

Jeff Schoenberg and Scott Holcomb, an Army veteran, and Red Clay Governor published a great op-ed in the Macon Telegraph which highlights the inadequacies in Chambliss (and Isakson)'s support for Veterans.

On May 1, Sen. Chambliss put out a press release to crow about his support for the Enhancement of Recruitment, Retention, and Readjustment through Education Act, S.2938. This is a bill which promises to raise education benefits for veterans who have served since 9/11. What Sen. Chambliss omits in that press release is that his support of this bill is nothing but political cover.

S.2938 is a shadow of the real G.I. Bill now pending in the Senate. S.2938 isn't going to pass and Chambliss and the other co-sponsors, including Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, know it.

The real action is taking place surrounding S. 22, the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2007. S.22 was proposed by combat veterans from both political parties. It actually fixes the G.I. Bill so that it works for today's veterans and their families.

At the moment S.22 has 57 co-sponsors in the Senate and 277 cosponsors in the House. That's nearly enough to guarantee passage. Prominent veterans' groups are lined up behind the bill including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, the Disabled American Veterans, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, AMVETS, and Student Veterans of America. They are all working hard to find the last few supporters needed in the Senate to get the bill to the president's desk. These same groups dismiss S.2938 as a sham.

What's the difference in the bills? S.22 is a comprehensive overhaul of the G.I. Bill, the first proposed in more than 20 years. At its heart is a renewal of the promise that America made to the veterans of World War II: If you serve your country, your government will make it possible for you to go to college. S.22 provides benefits to cover tuition, fees and books, along with a small stipend - just like the original G.I Bill. That program put America's WWII veterans through college and is credited, rightly, as one of the great building blocks of America's economic success in the 20th century.

What's in S.2938? A few more dollars for tuition, and nothing like a guarantee that the benefit would cover even the cost of a vet's local two-year community college. The bill makes no real attempt to bring the benefit in line with the needs or our returning veterans.

The General

A new Strategic Vision poll in Georgia that shows Sen. John McCain leading Sen. Barack Obama in a general election match up, 54% to 40%.

Taegan Goddard asks if Bob Barr will put Georgia in play?

The one state to watch is Barr's home state of Georgia, where he could conceivably get five or more percent of the vote. Georgia has long been seen as part of the GOP base. However, when combined with the large numbers of black voters expected to come out for Sen. Barack Obama, Barr's candidacy could possibly tip the state's 15 electoral votes to the Democrats. That could be the difference in a close election.
