THE CAMPAIGN
A one year effort, beginning July 2007, to ignite, encourage, and promote the establishment of mentor/apprentice relationships amongst African American professional men, organizations, businesses, schools, and youth in Philadelphia and beyond.
The goal of the campaign is to form partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and media to accomplish the following:
-
To recruit African American men to refer to existing mentorship organizations in need of men.
-
To get a minimum of 200 African American men in Philadelphia to sign up and commit to become mentors before the end of the campaign.
-
To get a minimum of 50 African American businesses to sign-up to implement an apprenticeship program. (Phase 2 of the campaign)
-
To get the Philadelphia Schools and/or Truancy Organizations to identify at-risk youth (ages 13-18) for the apprenticeship program. (Phase 2)
-
To get men to identify an at-risk youth in their community between the age of 19-24 to mentor.
-
To get a minimum of 25 businesses to offer discounts on their product or service for men that sign up to participate in the M.A.N. movement.
Our long-term goal, with financial support, is to implement the campaign in other cities throughout the nation.

Save the Date: The MISsed Education Poetry Slam
The campaign ends in Philadelphia on Saturday, June 7, 2008. To close out the campaign in Philadelphia, the team will do an event specifically for the young men it purposes to help. The team believes that there is a benefit to bringing young men together to hear stories from professional men that have turned their lives around. Since today’s youth are heavily influenced by music and the arts, we propose to end the campaign with a poetry event specifically for them. Two national artists and local poets have been invited to speak to young men about changing the direction of their lives. The event will also feature two of the campaigns Advocates. Each invited MAN will be given an opportunity to share their story about how they beat the odds and succeeded in their profession. |
