Vote By Mail, or "VBM", is cost-effective, reliable, and increases voter turnout. Most importantly, Vote By Mail makes voting easier for people who have busy lives... like you.
Vote By Mail for Tennessee is affiliated with the national Vote By Mail Project, a grassroots movement that is spreading across America. Our goal is to work on multiple fronts to institute a VBM election system at the local and state level.

VBM Town Hall Meeting - Democracy For Rutherford County - |
|
... a big atta-boy to Jared Barrett and the gang at Democracy For Rutherford County for hosting their Town Hall Meeting on Vote-By-Mail. The audience was very engaged with the topic and even included two election officials -- John Taylor, Chairman of the Rutherford County Election Commission and Vickie Koelman, Administrator of Elections for Montgomery County.
The Rutherford County event occurred on Tuesday night, May 22nd, at the Patterson Park Community Center.
Democracy For Clarksville also hosted their own event later in the week on Thursday, May 24th. It was held at the library in Clarksville. |

VBM test recommended by TACIR - |
DFT's Vote By Mail got two big boosts today! The first came from the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) which recommended that the state "consider making early voting and voting by mail more accessible" and that the state "consider a Vote By Mail pilot program." The second came from Brook Thompson, director of the Tennessee Division of Elections, who told us after the meeting that he would be open to setting up a trial of the program. Thompson's support and the TACIR report were two big steps toward bringing Vote By Mail to Tennessee, but there's still lots of work to be done yet. We're hoping to get legislation yet this session that would enable the trials. If we're unsuccessful, it goes on the agenda for next session. But regardless, we must continue to build grass-roots support for the program. That means we need to continue our effort to hold VBM programs throughout the state for the public and local elected officials. If we can get public and local leadership support, we'll have a much better chance of getting a trial program approved. Much of the thanks for this effort goes to Dave Thomas, who has taken the lead in shepherding the issue in the legislature, and Carol Kemp of Democracy for Cumberland County who got the ball rolling. We've got a long way to go, but we're making great progress. You can help by scheduling a VBM presentation in your community. Contact me (jim@democracyfortennessee.com) for information on how to do it.

VBM A Big Splash At The DFT Convention - |
|

I want to extend my thanks and appreciation to everyone that helped make the Vote-By-Mail session a success at Saturday's DFT Convention in Nashville.
Carol Kemp of Democracy For Cumberland County gets the big atta-girl for getting us this far. It was mostly her legwork and material that showed up in the session. Jared Barrett of Democracy for Rutherford County and Virginia Teddy from Democracy for Clarksville also get a big shout-out for picking up the ball and making sure that we will have Town Hall meetings on Vote-By-Mail in their counties. Rutherford County's is already scheduled for the 15th of May!
Finally, I want to thank all of the participants in the session. We had a great cross section of members and others from across the state that were interested, engaged, and enthused. The questions and insight from the participants were excellent.
What a great foundation from which to build!

VBM's first "Day on the Hill" - |
|
On March 22, I made a presentation on Vote by Mail to the Joint Study Committee on Voter Confidence, a subcommittee of the State & Local Government Committee. This committee is composed of six state Senators and six Representatives and is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Their task is to look at the proposed bills dealing with voting issues and to recommend those bills that they feel should go forward to the full committee for consideration.
